A Tradition of Quality and Innovation

For 19 years, Annalara White Dorper has been a leader in the Australian meat sheep industry. Known for breeding White Dorpers that thrive in a range of environments and production systems, Annalara has built a reputation for quality, consistency, and innovation. Each ram at the Annual Ram Sale is carefully selected by Steve and Jack to ensure it meets the highest standards for meat production, phenotype and overall durability.

We like taller White Dorpers that carry length and muscle from the neck down to the pin bones as our template. They need to have a nice head as you'll see reflected in our Classimate figures. We class our rams to our own detriment, we could have 150+ rams in the sale easily to make it even bigger but we want to build that quality. Our goal is 150 rams at the sale in the next 4 years as the shedding ewe flock grew from 4% to 7 % across Australia.

I've seen more and more producers opting to breed their own rams instead of buying from established studs and it's not just within White Dorper or Black Dorpers. On the surface, it makes sense—saving money, controlling genetics, and keeping things simple. But after years in the industry, we've learnt that this approach can be a double-edged sword. While home-breeding rams might seem like a cost-effective solution, it carries significant genetic risks that could hurt the long-term productivity and resilience of the flock. Inbreeding, reduced genetic diversity, and weakened performance traits are real issues that can quietly creep in and undermine years of hard work. We want you to be able to get to your objectives in 3 years not 8 years.

           The Risks of Genetic Decline

           Inbreeding and Reduced Hybrid Vigor

I get why so many producers are taking this route. The appeal is obvious:

            Cost Savings:

Avoiding the hefty price tags on stud rams.

            Control Over Genetics:

Choosing traits that suit specific conditions.

            Convenience:

Not having to deal with transport and outside purchases.

But these benefits can quickly turn into problems if the breeding program isn’t managed properly.

One of the biggest concerns with home-breeding is inbreeding. The genetic pool shrinks, and before you know it, you’re dealing with:

            More hereditary diseases.

            Lower fertility rates.

Poorer growth rates and feed efficiency.

Weaker immune systems, leaving flocks vulnerable to disease outbreaks.

           Loss of Performance Traits

Stud breeders put in the hard work to improve genetics for things like:

            Carcass quality.

            Faster weight gain.

            Wool production (for wool breeds).

            Resistance to parasites and disease.

If home-bred rams are used for multiple generations, these crucial traits can fade, leading to lower overall productivity.

Increased Risk of Recessive Genetic Disorders

Inbreeding also increases the chances of recessive genetic disorders showing up in the flock. Without proper genetic testing and controlled breeding, producers may unintentionally pass on harmful traits that take years to correct.

Best Practices to Mitigate Genetic Risks

If you’re set on home-breeding rams, careful management is key. Here’s how to keep your flock strong:

           Regularly Introduce New Genetics

Buy in fresh genetics from reputable studs every few breeding cycles.

Keep solid breeding records to track bloodlines and avoid close inbreeding.

Use Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) to make smart selection choices.

Prioritise traits that will improve the flock over time, not just short-term gains.

At AWD HQ we look for long-term to get a short term reward along the way. We want high yielding carcass giving you more money and breeding an efficient animal if you're East or West of the Newell. White Dorpers are for you.

Home-breeding rams might seem like a great way to cut costs, but without a solid plan, it can backfire. Inbreeding, genetic drift, and loss of hybrid vigor can creep in and damage the productivity of a flock. The best approach? Strike a balance. Bring in outside genetics by all means that doesn't just mean ours, keep detailed records, and use selective breeding strategies. That way, you get the best of both worlds—cost savings and a genetically strong, high-performing flock that will sustain itself for years to come.

We're jumping into 2024 and it's looking bright. With more rain falling as I write this there will be plenty of grass ahead for most of our clients if not an average year. 2023 was a testing time for any sheep producers but now with a few showers and moisture in the ground we look back and see actually how well we performed in the saleyards. A testament to the breed and our foundational ewes who are the power house of AWD.

This year's sale is starting off well with plenty of clients getting some season changing rains and feed in abundance. Nothing much has changed this year for the 18th annual ram sale, only the depth of the rams. A really impressive bunch as they latest drop should be. We're in the stage of targeting what traits we want precisely and it's a great tool for you to get closer to achieving your own 2024 goals.

We will have similar numbers to last year around the 100 mark to provide clients new and existing the genetic gain you need to put some AWD lambs on the ground. The continuance of marketing your lambs with AWD Prime will be an added benefit for any breeder looking to sell quality ewe lines to re-stockers without the hassle.

It's not easy transitioning to something new especially when it's all your family as done for many years. But it is something that clients before and now sheep breeders in the wool game are looking for.

It was 1997 when we first got into White Dorper's and investigated further to ensure it was the right decision for us and our family.

Before delving into the transition process, it's crucial to understand why many producers choose to make the switch to White Dorper's. These sheep are renowned for their adaptability, hardiness, and superior meat quality and fast growing. We and clients can sell sucker lambs from 3 months onwards or over the hook 4-6 months. The short, dense hair coat of White Dorper's offers several advantages over traditional wool breeds, such as reduced susceptibility to flystrike and enhanced resistance to harsh weather conditions.

The first step in transitioning to White Dorper's is to conduct a thorough assessment of your current flock, facilities, and management practices. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of your existing operation, taking note of factors such as land suitability, climate, and market demands and access. We can help with the access as we've been there and done that. This assessment will serve as the foundation for developing a tailored transition plan.

White Dorper's thrive in various climates, but it's essential to ensure that your infrastructure aligns with their specific needs. You won't be getting rid of the shearing shed just yet as if you go down the breeding opposed to buying method you'll still be able to collect a clip. Infrastructure for White Dorper is no drama just really the newer equipment reading EIDs. We found that in pastoral areas spelling the paddocks and grass management to be used as a tool when working with White Dorper. Consider implementing rotational grazing systems to optimize grass/pasture utilisation, a practice that aligns well with the natural foraging behaviour of White Dorper's.

White Dorper's have different nutritional requirements compared to wool breeds. Work with a nutritionist to develop a balanced and cost-effective feeding plan that meets the needs of your new flock. Pay attention to protein, energy, and mineral requirements, adjusting the diet based on factors like age, reproductive status, and seasonal variations.

White Dorper Proves It's Commercial Viability

White Dorper Continue to Show Dominance in Commercial Breeding

The Cobar Ram Sale has been and gone with 114 lots went to auction knocked down by Nutriens Solutions. Annalara White Dorper had a great day with Steve, Jack and Isabel attending to showcase ten of their best.

Results for Annalara White Dorper were tops of $4,000 sold lots 62 and 100 and sold all ten for an average of $3,200. Great to see the confidence in the western districts of NSW and also online with two of our rams going to St George in QLD.

As one of the original studs who were attending the Cobar Ram Sale it was great to catch up and see old and new clients to get together just in time before the NSW regional lockdown game into play. We always look forward to heading west as it's where the stud originated and what type of ram we wanted to breed. One that can withstand the harsh environments that western NSW can throw at you.

A great day at the Prime Lamb competition for Steve and Jack as they collected the most successful exhibitor for the white dorper wethers sent in a week prior to the Dubbo Show. The Prime Lamb Competition is a great way for us at AWD to gauge where we are with our breeding and to keep us honest in what we do. With our emphasis on producing quality lambs on a grass-fed diet and turning them off at a younger age.

With over 500 lambs entered into the Fletcher International sponsored event we were amazed to come away with a few awards on the day. We entered in two trade pens for one lighter and a heavier pen.

Our two pens are below for the figures that got us across the line on the day. With two pens both in the 1st and 5th position we are where we need to be with our genetics. We're producing quality fat lambs through our commercial flock that not only improves the return for sheep breeders using AWD genetics but for consumers who receive the end product. With impactful traits that we have been chasing since 1998 we are really happy with our line of genetics and what the ewes are capable of.

We're breeding for consistency and reliability straight out of the paddock. Our sheep thrive of the land and when it's a good season they will flourish as we've seen out fertility rate drastically improve with the abundance of feed.

Time to add some lamb to your plate this Australia Day!

Make lamb, not walls! 2020 has sure been a roller coaster and the new lamb ad captures just that. For the first time the Australian borders had shut residents out or in. This is the time of the year that the sheep farmers look forward to spark a spike in consumer demand for what is Australia's most loved form of protein... well we think so anyway.

Well 2021 is here and we're happy to move on from 2020. With a great year for agriculture to know that we can withstand the pressures of high demands on consumer end of the supply chain. With the lockdowns across the world and in Australia produced an unprecedented increase for protein across the world in more forms than one.

. With most 2019 drops we were able to carry them through and they were able to get some much needed grass into their diet. We've really been improving our paddocks in terms of new paddocks where we're able to rest feed for several months to allow for the ground cover to remain robust. With our improved pastures proving their worth 10 times over through the summer months we're bloody glad to have what we do now. With a solid 5 year plan to develop most of our paddocks on a three year crop rotation to reduce the chance of competitive grasses to over grow our seed mix.

. Jack had studied a BA Agribusiness/Marketing Management at UNE and has been using it in the UK for the last 3 years. So he's back to work on building on Annalara White Dorper. We're in an exciting position of growth not only for us as AWD but for agriculture as an industry. We'll be sharing more about what makes AWD tick and what drives our selection of the best genetics out there.

How we wean our lambs off their mothers

The weaning of our commercial and stud operations is very much the same to allow for the lambs welfare. As it is difficult to hold the lambs back from their mothers on the first day of weaning we hold them in a containment paddock with around 5 acres to move around.

As our containment paddock is just set behind the sheep yards it allows us to move them in a short distance as mustering weaners can be testing (if you know, you know).

We have sown oats, serradella and biscerrula to help provide an healthy start for the lambs. If we have no feed in the paddock we will provide hay to provide the dry matter.

Our weaner management we aim to:

Maximise our survival rates: This is by achieving the right weights at weaning and growth rates after weaning. Once they have reached the right weight they are then able to be weaned. Due to the 6-8 week joining program, there can be a difference in weights has one lamb is more than a month older which are conceived early on in the piece.

Allow our maiden ewes to reach the right weight as well before joining them to rams. This works well to increase the lambs health and the ewe's life time health.

What are white dorpers good for?

Find out the benefits of White Dorper and Annalara White Dorper. See how you can implement the sheep breed into your commercial flock.

How Annalara White Dorper discovered the South African sheep breed

Annalara White Dorper was established in 1998 from embryos imported from South Africa. From the first day we have been amazed of the performance of the White Dorper breed and Dorper sheep in general. As they really know how to survive in harsh conditions.

Two traits we looked for in White Dorper:

             Fast maturing breed

: White Dorpers are an excellent choice as they are a fast growing sheep breed, from one day old to six months. It adds an advantage to the breed when producing quality red meat for an increasing demand of protein across Australia and globally. With lambs ready for slaughter at 6 months of age. As it is a younger age it is seen to not be sustainable. By implementing the right structure in place to allow for your flock to become fully developed.

             High fertility rates:

How to get your flock to the numbers it needs to be is by having excellent fertility rates with your ewes. For both maiden and older ewes it is important that they are still providing value while rearing lambs. To have the high fertility rates it is important that they are receiving the right nutrition and this can be done by providing a supplement in the form of a dry lick and lick blocks.

We were based in western NSW near Wilcannia. With the tough conditions of droughts and floods through the 1990's we were looking to find a breed of sheep that we could introduce to the area that would perform under intense heat as we neared 50 degrees celsius in summer periods.

Three ways you can have White Dorpers:

             Stud Flock:

With the knowledge of Dorpers spreading across Australia in the 2000's it was soon that there was an influx of studs popping up across the country. Without the studs it is not possible to know the true genetics and data behind your production.

             Commercial enterprise:

The most common way that White Dorpers are grown across Australia as the studs are selling to their clients in order to supply the market with quality source of red meat.

             Hobby farm:

With many interested hobby farmers interested in the breed due to their capacity of eating literally anything they have been popular on small blocks as well.

We have been out of the show ring in recent years and look to get back into at next year's Dubbo Show.

Shows are a great place for studs to come together to see how the hard work is paying off.

Hopefully, be able to get back into again next year.
